GEO: What It Is, How It Works and Why a Non-Optimised Site Will Fall Behind in the AI Era

Miguel Camacho · 2025-11-19

For two decades, SEO (Search Engine Optimization) was the key to online visibility. However, the rise of generative Artificial Intelligence (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, etc.) has radically changed how users find information.

Today, people do not just "search"; they ask. And results no longer come as a list of links, but as a concise answer generated by the AI.

This shift has given rise to GEO (Generative Engine Optimization).

What is GEO and why is it the new priority?

GEO is the set of techniques for optimising a site so that it can be understood and used by generative AI models in their answers. While SEO focuses on how Google crawls and indexes, GEO focuses on how the AI processes, summarises, combines and reasons about content.

In essence, it is "SEO for conversational engines".

The fundamental difference: Deep understanding

AIs do not work like classic search engines. They do not just index text; they extract meaning, entities and conceptual structure. For an AI, a site must be:

1. Semantically structured: With clear headings (H1, H2), lists, FAQs and structured data. The AI values organisation, not just volume of text. 2. Concise and clear: Models reward precision and clarity. Redundant or messy content is ignored. They want the direct answer, not 1,000 words of filler. 3. Identifiable: The AI needs to clearly understand who you are, what you offer and what sets you apart.

A site can rank well on Google (SEO) and still be ignored by AI engines (GEO).

The consequences of inaction

A site not optimised for GEO risks being left behind:

Loss of visibility: Your business will not be mentioned in AI-generated answers, while your competitors will be. Misrepresentation: Confusing content can lead the AI to misinterpret or describe your services incorrectly. Advertising dependency: The loss of organic traffic in the new search ecosystem forces greater investment in paid advertising.

Keys to optimising your site for GEO

The good news is that GEO is based on content and structure best practices:

Initial executive summary: A paragraph of 3 to 5 lines that clearly defines who you are and what you do. Heading hierarchy (H1, H2, H3): Use a logical structure to guide the AI. Lists and FAQs: Structure services, features and frequently asked questions in lists to make data extraction easier. Schema implementation: Use structured data (FAQPage, LocalBusiness, Service) to map your content to recognisable entities. To-the-point content: Remove filler, long sentences and unnecessary storytelling. Load speed: AIs prefer to process fast, light sites.

GEO is not a future trend; it is the current search standard. Those who optimise their site now for AI understanding will be years ahead of the competition.
